Conventional Wisdom
Conventional wisdom (which is usually wrong) states that Dogs are “Mans Best Friend”. We’ll get back to that statement later. As far as we are concerned, any pet you have can be your “Best Friend”, however we do not wish to diminish the role of The Canine in the history of mankind.

You don’t have to have a pet to be a "Pet Person"
We also classify those who appreciate and even tolerate pets as Pet People. Everybody’s circumstances and situation is different.
Yes, you can be a Pet Person even if you do not have a pet. Please allow me to clarify my statement. Pet People are not only those of us who choose to take on the responsibility of caring for the creatures we bring into our homes and our lives, but we at IluvMyPets.com consider people who appreciate pets are Pet People also.
As an example, I offer this anecdote. Most of my life, I have had pets and they brought lots of joy into my life. In fact, I worked in the pet industry when I was younger. I started as an employee, became a manager and eventually owned my own Pet Shop. I was a working owner, which means 12- 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every week, every year and the years just kind of blended together.
The reason I share my personal information and Bio is to make my point. There have been times in my life when I have had lots of pets and times when my personal situation would not allow for a pet in my life (it would have been selfish of me to subject any creature to a life without the attention all creatures deserve), thus, it would have been wrong to not consider me a Pet Person at those points of my life when I didn't have a Pet.

John Calvin Coolidge, the 13th President of the United States, claimed that candidates who didn't like animals did not belong in the White House.
Humans and Pets have a long history together. We can’t be positive exactly how this relationship started, however we do have a better conception of how this relationship may have developed. I cannot interpret the past, I definitely cannot foresee the future, in fact, I sometimes have trouble understanding the present. As far as the question posed here: How Did the Human/Animal relationship develop?
Please let me offer one possible scenario, the one I currently believe in;
Way back in time, when whatever our ancestors were, or looked like, they would have generated waste and trash. Wolves and other animals would have been attracted to this trash. I was not there, but I can imagine wolf packs protecting the clans of humans supplying trash, bones, dead clan members etc. from other wolf packs. i can also imagine wolf pups being adopted by early man and raised as companions.
